I ask this question a lot…
Whenever I go on a “none photography” adventure, I always debate which camera & gear I should schlep. Last Thanksgiving, I schlepped my Sony a850 & two big lenses all the way to Washington DC only two take four mediocre images. This Christmas I’ll be going back to DC to spend the holidays with my sister & brother in law, and then Chicago for New Year’s Eve.
When considering whether to bring my camera gear I base my decision on the following:
Am I traveling by car or plane? Flying is clearing a strike against bringing my gear.
How much time will I actually have for photography? One two-hour photography adventure is not worth the effort. I’ll have three non-xmas days, but two of those are Saturday & Sunday; and if the weather sucks I say to “hell with it” anyhow.
Have I ever photographed this place before? Is there a once-in-a-lifetime type event happening? I have photographed DC, but not during the Christmas season. However, if I’m going to bring my good camera that means I need to bring a tripod. I have two Gitzo’s that I would consider bringing: a carbon fiber Mountaineer 0 Series & a Compact Basalt 3 Series. The Sony a850 + 16-35mm Zeiss is really too much weight for the 0 Series, but the 3 Series weighs 4x as much…
How shitty is the weather going to be? Chicago is way too freaking cold to even think about doing anything outside; and alcohol + idiot college friends + camera gear = Delicate Arch accident to the third power.
How hung-over will I be? J/K, sorta…
Is someone expecting me to take pictures of an event or do family portraits.
Solution A: Buy a Sony RX1! Oh wait, I’d rather spend $3,000 on a used Minolta 400mm F4.5.
Solution B: Who wants to buy me a Sony RX1?
